Mission Statement:

“We, the members of the Indiana County Sheriff’s Office are committed to the needs of our community and take pride in the delivery of exceptional service in an effective, responsible and professional manner.

We recognize and accept our responsibility to maintain order while affording dignity and respect to every individual we encounter while pursuing justice. We are driven by our calling to serve our community and interagency partnerships with honor, courage, integrity and respect.”

Core Values:

Integrity: We will hold ourselves accountable and demand the highest level of ethical and moral standards from all. Integrity does not stand by itself; it supports our other values of courage, honor, and respect.

Honor: We honor our role in the community and vow never to abuse our powers. Honor means nobility of mind and a distinction of respect. Our honor allows us to maintain a high level of moral character.

Courage: We gave the confidence and resolution to serve and protect our community. Courage is our tool of control, allowing us to selflessly risk ourselves to protect others.

Respect: We will be considerate to the wishes, opinions and decisions of those who we serve and those who we work with. To respect means to appreciate, consider and value another’s foundation of beliefs and actions.

The Indiana County Sheriff’s Office is one of the most highly trained law enforcement agencies in the County. We serve more than 82,000 residents, with a staff of 20 law enforcement officers and two administrative office personnel.

The Office of the Sheriff in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is authorized and established by the Constitution of 1784 and the current revisions, which our Commonwealth government now operates. The Constitution provides that a Sheriff shall be elected in each county, for a four-year term, and that his powers, duties, and compensation be prescribed by law. The first election for a Sheriff in Indiana County was held in 1806, and elections have been held ever since.

The Sheriff’s broad powers authorize him and his Deputies to enforce the law. The Sheriff’s Office is called upon to assist local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies during emergencies and investigations.

The primary duties of the Office of the Sheriff are:

  • Ensure the safety within the Indiana County Judicial facilities.
  • Serve and enforce court orders and Protection from Abuse orders.
  • Serve all civil process paperwork, perform levies, and execute on writs.
  • Conduct sales of real and personal property.
  • Retain and serve bench warrants issued by the Court of Common Pleas for criminal and domestic relation cases.
  • Transport prisoners to judicial proceedings, to local and state correctional facilities, and additionally perform extraditions from other states when required.
  • Issue licenses to conceal carry firearms and federal firearm licenses to sell.
